I've created this web page in the hope of making contact with any descendents of the VIOHL family who came from Prussia in about 1866 and settled in the East End of London.
My interest began when I received a copy of my maternal grandmother's birth certificate, and found that her mother's maiden name was Viohl. A search on FreeBMD showed that the name Viohl first appeared in England in general, and east London in particular, in 1867, when my great grandmother, Margaretta Katarina (Margaret) Viohl married Johan Karl Wilhelm (William) Gobel.
The other names were LOUSIA, married 1871; HEINRICH, 1873; and HEINRICH ALBERT (known as Albert) who married Cornelia Degemans in 1876. Although Heinrich appears in the 1891 census, I have yet to find him or his family in the 1901, so he may have left England by this time.
As these four Viohls suddenly appeared in London at about the same time, I am assuming that they were related, probably cousins. Margaret's father, according to her marriage certificate, was called George (Georg - I have made contact with a Viohl in Germany who is researching the name, and he has sent me details of Margaret's parents and siblings, also, interestingly, details of either a betrothal or marriage to a cousin, who died a few months later). Louisa and Heinrich Albert's father was Albert (although on Louisa's certificate he was Joiner, and on Albert's Farmer), and Heinrich's father was Herbert, also a Farmer.
Both Heinrich and Albert were said to be Sugar Bakers.
Albert and Cornelia had a large number of children. So far I have found two sons, ALBERT, born in 1883, and GEORGE, 1897 (though as George is not listed in the 1901 census, he may have died). I have also discovered that a GERTRUDE Viohl was born in 1907, possibly Albert junior's daughter.
I believe that Heinrich had two sons, Harry and Herbert.
So, if you have discovered that you have a VIOHL in your family tree, who was living in East London or Essex from 1866 onwards, please do contact me.
